When I was in Japan in August, I was asked to model Hysteric Glamour's high end menswear line for HUGE magazine. They're a super rad mens fashion rag. I feel pretty silly about posting it, but here I am in all my gender bending glory. (God only knows what the article says, but apparently it "really resonates with the poor artist kids". HA.)

The NY Times (T mag blogs) recently ran a story I did about staycations (and my summer) in New York City. They, painstakingly, edited down from over 100 photos, to one per location. In actuality, I had envisioned it as a photo essay, so here is my version of the story.

It’s been more than a decade since I’ve spent an entire summer, straight through, in New York City. It’s a brutal prospect, what with the steaming pavements and bone-wilting humidity, but if it has to be done, it should be done right. So this summer, armed with my girlfriend and my Metrocard, I set out to design the perfect balance of work, play and sunshine. Herewith I give you my staycation story, a real New Yorker’s guide to not losing your mind between May Day and Labor Day weekend.

THE RED HOOK POOL

The Red Hook pool has become my personal oasis. I’m not one to be bothered by the curiosity that are real Brooklynites, and some terrorizing children — the water is clean, and the pool so vast that you can always find a corner to float alone in. However, don’t arrive expecting anything less than tons of locals on their own daycations.

The pool is watched over by a fleet of lifeguards, all of whom looked like buff high school students on summer break.

We tested their boundaries by play wrestling and were swiftly wrist slapped by a hail of shrill whistle blasts and informed, over a loudspeaker no less, that there is “no person-to-person contact, man to woman, woman to woman, or man to man.”

The Red Hook Recreational Area, as the park surrounding the pool is known, is just a short walk from the Carroll stop on the F line.

(Note: Do not follow the advice of Google maps and try to get to the Smith and 9th Street stop, it is semi-permanently closed.)

A lock is a must — and fortunately can be procured one at the 99 cent stores on nearby Lorraine Street, between Columbia and Hicks. Bring a towel, and some flip-flops to wade through the shower area before you get outside, as the bathrooms are an unfortunate sight. Dotting Bay street on the way into the pool, you will find several Latin food trucks serving homemade tacos, tamales, empanadas, fresh fruit juices, and shakes.

I recommend the Vaqueros truck, on the corner of Clinton and Bay, with its mind-bending hibiscus tea, perfect for a pre- and post-swim refresher.

CONEY ISLAND

Coney Island is a classic. This was where my low-income mom would bring me for a special treat when I was a kid. The last stop on the F train brought us Nathan’s hot dogs, cotton candy and the freak shows both behind the curtain and on the street.

Recently, Coney’s old-school attractions have been invaded (some might call it revamped) by a bunch of new rides under the umbrella “Scream Zone” including the “Soarin’ Eagle” — a roller coaster on steroids, in which riders clamped into a horizontal position in a cage are hurtled, face first, through a steel maze of adrenaline and, yes, screaming.

But not to be missed is the Cyclone, the old-fashioned wooden roller coaster. The fainthearted will stoke your fears with tales of people being ejected from their seats, and cars flying off the rails, but I say bah humbug — the Cyclone will never die

Hit the boardwalk for a fashion show of authentic New York crazies and an endless smorgasbord of sugar-based snacks from cotton candy, to ice cream, to funnel cake.

If you’re lucky, like we were, you might even stumble into a massive dance party under the beating sun that had a throng moving to ’90s house music for several straight hours.

But don’t go to Coney for a swim — the beach is literally covered in trash. Instead, venture a hundred yards up the boardwalk past the Aquarium (also worth a visit), where a string of authentic Russian restaurants on the Little Odessa beachfront serve up Kvas, Chicken Tabak and vodka by the gram.

..oh, and did i mention? I shot almost the entire thing in color..

"The Kid" - A solo show

I'm very excited to present "The Kid", a study on my muse, Camila Toro.

The first print I ever sold was an image of Camila. Later, I used that image for the cover of my first book, "Lose My Number", and spent the subsequent months fielding endless questions about whether she was a boy or a girl, 12 or 25, and where people (of both genders) could find her to date her.

Camila was an early inspiration because she embodies so many of the things I find most exciting in young women right now: freedom, a genderless beauty, a nationless complexion, and the strength and wildness to do everything the boys do, but her way. Vaguely reminiscent of a young wolf, Camila's presence was equally as fascinating to others as it was to me.

"The Kid" presents 22 portraits of Camila, all black and white traditional Fibre prints, ranging from 50x60" to 8x10", in editions of 10. The work is available through Vacant Gallery or myself.

"Act Like You're Fine" - A group show

I'm equally excited to announce "Act Like You're Fine", a exhibition featuring the works of 11 wonderful artists that I had the pleasure of curating.

"Act Like You're Fine" deals with the things that consume us with obsession to the point of losing our self control - the things that drive us to passionate madness, behavior we don't recognize, frantic devotion - the feeling that we are not the rider, but are being ridden.

I'm sure most of Chelsea art walk was wondering the same thing last night: "Who was fuck the almost naked amazon chick writhing around in filth and dollar bills, lapdancing on people and holy crossing them with champagne????!" The unlikely candidate for drunk, sad, probably-diseased Christian stripper of the year is my dear friend, artist (and Ford model), Myla Dalbesio, performing her piece "Young Money" at Ramis Barquet gallery. (Go ahead, google her, and watch her Miss Teen Wisconsin video from 2004, and weep). To hell with career limitations!

The performance was a knockout. Her writhing, tits out body and looped Lil Wayne on blast, left uppity Chelsea art goers with mouths agape, soaked in champagne, wracked with creepy crawly guilt, and maybe hiding a boner. Photos to come.

All hail the return of un-ignorable provocation in art!

I just opened my mailbox to find a copy of the new issue of Dossier, (with a STOOPID good cover of andro king Andrej Pejic, shot by Collier Schorr). I brought it in while I peed and was mildly stunned to see my own name above a piece of text I had forgotten writing: the story of how I lost my virginity.

This cringeworthy moment was softened when I realized my dirty laundry was aired alongside revelations from Agnes B, Richard Kern, Ariel Schulman, Miranda July, Peter Sutherland, and several others.

It's a dope issue. Get it if you can.

My new book/zine/several folds of bound paper with images on them, "Kisser" is out now. Featuring images from Friday Night Throwdown, the now defunct series of illegal boxing matches often known as male model boxing that happened over the last year.

And get this: With the generous backing of WESC, it's FREE! Yippee!

Starting April 14th, the book will be available in every room at the Standard hotels in Los Angeles (downtown, and West Hollywood), through the middle of May, to accompany my installation in the vitrine in the Hollywood hotel (8300 Sunset).

Starting in May, Kisser will be available in WESC stores internationally, and a ton of arty farty places in New York City. Otherwise you'll have to flag me down on the street and take one off me.

My dear friend Kim Anh is one half of the band Saint Le Roq, and the duo are bringing out their first EP this year. In two weeks, I am hustling them and a crew into a van, and driving them into neck deep snow to create their first music video in the mountains.

The video is an amalgam of creepy ideas, to do with animals, and spit, religious iconography, and natures gyrations and all kinds of weird shit that you'll have to see to get, but I'm very excited about it.

BUT, they need your help to make it all possible!

The girls have created these dope t-shirts, which they are using to fundraise the costs of the production.

I was asked to be the guest curator/editor for Theme Magazine's new issue, "Apprentices". It comes out this week, and I'm really proud of all the work we put into it.

I interpreted the idea of an apprentice as loosely as I could, and sought out stories about non-traditional mentorship/apprenticeship relationships, which turned into a story about one of New York's most revered drag mothers, the sponsor/sponsee relationship in AA, a look at how Jeffrey Deitch influenced Kathy Grayson's ascent to ownership of her own gallery, a conversation with Cass Bird about her family of assistants, and an interpretive and intimate look into what happens when you feel slave to a master, amongst other things.

I wrote and shot the story about The Flawless Mother Sabrina, which you can read here.

We never got to see what this place was like, and since we couldn’t even find images anywhere, we decided to recreate what we think this grungy haven might have looked like in our gallery for a new generation of underground weirdos to experience. Posters everywhere! Racks all around the room, slapping back and forth, pins, stickers and patches, music and more. If you remember the old Postermat, come tell us if we got it right! Bring photos if you have them too!!!
The idea for this exhibition came from artist Aaron Bondaroff at dinner this past summer. A-ron frequented Postermat as a kid and helped us develop the feel of the show. The exhibition was made possible by generous support from LEVIS and in partnership with Proof 7 the best new printers in New York City.
